How Many Of You "Bumped" Your Field Service Hours?
by EvilForce inhow many of you bumped up your field service hours so you could keep the elders off your back?
our congo had a 10 hour "soft" target for guys.
however, if you didn't meet the 10 hours you got your "privledges" reduced or revoked.

The Great Crowd
by JAVA inwhen i see how many hits various topics receive compared to the number of posts, it?s obvious to me how many benefit from this forum.
i know most of us skip around from topic to topic before posting, but i think there is a large number of lurkers that read but are not registered members.
sometimes it?s easy for me to forget about, dare i say, the great crowd.

Java, I hear you. I was thinking that this place is sort of like that for the people leaving the organization. A place where they can find refuge.

HeyJava, the Great Crowd makes me think of the the inscription on the statue of liberty:
Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.I kind of think of this forum that way, a place for those people battered and bruised by the WBTS to find some refuge.

Making the truth your own!!!
by Gill inwhat is this awesome cultish phrase meant to signify?.
'make the truth your own!'.
i ask this because it has always 'irritated' me when people talk about jw children : 'he's made the truth his own now!'.

Sport: bringing out the worst in JWs
by Pleasuredome inin my time involved with the jws, i used to play a lot of football nearly every week with the bros. i used to find it amazing and laughable how some, including elders, would start name calling and getting aggresive, sometimes to the point of making threats.
it made me realise that football and other sports can show the true character of individuals.
has anyone here experienced things like this when playing sports with jws?

This has been a rant of mine on other threads, playing sports with JW's was the worst. I will also say the only serious injury I ever recieved (played high school & college) was from playing with the JW's, go figure.

Art, Worship and the JWs
by Sirona ini was reading the thread about "worldy churches" and it made me think about how the jws have a hatred of certain types of worship.. they hate anything "traditional" and state that it is corrupted (pagan).
they hate going into churches because they see religious symbolism like crosses, altars, candles and chalices.
big ornate churches are not beautiful to them, they are a symbol of satan.

To me the JW's are just another offshoot of the dour, if its fun, or beautiful, or compelling it must be bad Puritan goofballs that were kicked out of every decent country in Europe so they came here to the states to set up shop. Read the scarlet letter, could be a congregation of JW's, with poor Hester and the Rev. Dimsdale soon to be hauled before a Judicial Committe. People talk about how it is no wonder catholic priests have the problems they do because they deny their basic sexuality, well I say its no wonder the JW's have the problems they do because they try to deny their basic humanity.

It seems from reading the posts that many are interchanging being conscious and capable of thought with the concept of a soul. It seems to me the argument can be made that the brain facilitates the soul being able to interact in the material world and thus when damaged that interaction can no longer take place as the mechanical means for it has been damaged. Take for example if one believes in angels, they manifest themselves to humans in the physical plane so as to facilitate communication, if their human manifestation was damaged, would that mean they would cease to exist? I don't know that a brain injury is absolute proof that there is not something else that we are or that is inside of us. I think this is an example of there is no proof either way, one who believes can't prove that a soul exists and one who doesn't believe can't prove that it doesn't exist. I agree with most, we'll find out when we get there

Instruments that produce live music rather than the canned variety, candles, goblets, beautiful glass, the horror of it all. I would really hate to go to church in a place like that. I'd much rather to go one isn't called a church, that has no windows, some sad little fake plants in what looks like a stripped down classroom or low rent board meeting room where they don't have men of the cloth, but rather some janitor/window washer/carpet cleaner that can teach me the deep and subtle points of faith that all of these pompus churches have somehow missed or have been blinded to by the demunzzz, although I think I would make the sign of the cross when I go, just to put a smile on my face.
